Thursday Thirteen: 13 Images from Passo Ghisallo

Ciao a tutti! This week, I'm jumping right in with a collection of photos taken just last Saturday. So, please allow me to present:

13 Images from the Museum of Cycling and the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Ghisallo

Picture
Il Museo del Ciclismo (The Museum of Cycling) - Passo Ghisallo - Magreglio, Italy
Picture
View of the grounds of the museum and the Sanctuary (not pictured, on left).
Picture
This statue of two cyclists is the reason I've wanted to come here for so long. The museum was built just a few years ago.
Picture
Il Santuario della Madonna del Ghisallo. The Madonna del Ghisallo has been the patroness of cyclists since 1949.
Picture
Don Ermelindo ViganĂ² was the rector of the sanctuary and asked the pope to declare the Madonna del Ghisallo the patroness of cyclists.
Picture
Three legendary Italian cyclists are honored with monuments outside the sanctuary (l-r): Gino Bartali, Fausto Coppi and Alfredo Binda.
Picture
A close-up of the statue on the grounds between the sanctuary and the museum.
Picture
Detail of the fallen cyclist.
Picture
Detail of the victorious cyclist.
Picture
This is the road up from Bellagio, which the Giro di Lombardia traveled to reach the pass just one week before I arrived. (Yeah, my timing stinks.)
Picture
View from the museum's belvedere, looking down on Lake Como.
Picture
Inside the Museo del Ciclismo. A pretty darned good use of space and light, I'd say.
Picture
Inside the sanctuary are a number of bicycles and jerseys from riders - professional and amateur alike - along with the normal ex-votos and tributes. In the center of this photo is the bicycle which belonged to Fabio Casartelli, who died as a result of his crash during a descent in the 1995 Tour de France.

And there you have them: 13 Images from Passo Ghisallo!

I hope you've enjoyed seeing them at least a fraction as much as I enjoyed taking them.

It's no secret to anyone that cycling is one of my favorite things in the world.

And some folks understand that better than others.

Some don't get it at all.

But hey...

To each their own!

The showers at the Roubaix Velodrome. Ciao for now!

I live in Chicagoland, which is beautiful but the geography is sooooo flat. So seeing Italy and it's mountains was a treat! But I could argue that the greatest natural beauty is the one in the shower.

I'm glad you enjoyed the shots - and I'm inclined to agree with you on the finer points of natural beauty. ;)

What wonderful shots! I really like the 5th one down, with the two statues - excellent framing. Looks like some beautiful country there, too. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thanks so much! I was quite pleased with that shot, too. :) It is a beautiful area - and I'd wanted to go there for such a long time, it was a very satisfying visit.

I know - it was the first place I've visited in a long time where I said to my husband "Can't we stay here another day or two?"

Alas, it was not to be. Still, we'll have to go back one day - hopefully in time for the Giro di Lombardia!

I love that statue of the fallen cyclist. Beautiful pictures, Kim.

Thanks, Jennifer! I find that statue quite moving, and the fallen rider is one reason for that. I'm glad you liked the pics. :)

Looks like you got some good material of scenes for your novel. Lovely vistas.

I did, indeed. I only wish we could have spent more time there just enjoying the atmosphere.

What a grand location. I'm a little surprised that cycling is given homage in such a hilly location.

Actually, it's the perfect place for it. Any amateur road cyclist worth his salt is going to have a go at climbing - it's part of what makes for a really good workout! Not to mention the bragging rights of saying you conquered a particular mountain pass. LOL! I lost track of how many cyclists we saw climbing up the mountains around Lake Como - I just sat back and enjoyed the view. *ahem*

It's an absolutely *gorgeous* place - although the roads can be a bit nervewracking when driving through the tiny towns - and the peace and quiet at our hotel made it one of the most relaxing short holidays Alle and I have taken in a long, long time.

Oh man....I was reading through this hoping I wouldn't see some poor naked dude on a bike. How painful that would be :)

Actually, I *do* have several of those - most of them professionals - but I opted for the Roubaix Velodrome pic. It felt more "poetic" somehow. ;)
