Thirteen Cycling Races

10/6/2010

Okay - relatively short and sweet this week.

Not a lot of time to put in, but I had fun, anyway. :)

This week, I present to you:

Thirteen Cycling Races!
Picture
The cycling season starts earlier than ever now, with the Tour Down Under in January. Australian cyclists are making an especially strong showing all over the world this year, I might add. Woot!

Picture
The Tour of Oman in February is one of the earliest races on the calendar, too - and the first winner of this brand new race was my boy, Fabian Cancellara! Double-Woot!

Picture
A beautiful race to watch, Paris-Nice proved quite interesting this last March. Alberto Contador won, but it wasn't easy - which is what made it exciting. Heh.

Picture
Milan San-Remo, also in March, is always fascinating to watch. Occasionally, riders come seemingly out of nowhere to win - like Fabian did back in 2008.

Picture
The Tour of Flanders in April is legendary amongst cycling fans. Some of the toughest climbs around - on cobblestones, no less - make this one-day race particularly challenging.

Photos: Cancellara in 2008, 2009 (after his chain broke on the final climb) and finally, 2010.

The Giro d'Italia, in May, is another favorite. One of the three Grand Tours of cycling (along with the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana), almost every professional cyclist wants a win here under his belt.

The Tour of California moved to May this year, which meant it conflicted with the Giro d'Italia. But that didn't stop some of cycling's heavy hitters from taking part.

Picture
In June comes the Tour of Switzerland. My boy - who happens to be Swiss - won it last year. He's riding again this year. Go Spartacus! Go Fab!

Picture
July. Do I really need to mention the Tour de France? Okay. I just did. ;)

Picture
August brings a couple of races, too. One of them is the Tour of Ireland - beautiful to watch, by the way...

Picture
Also in August, the final Grand Tour - la Vuelta a Espana - or Tour of Spain.

Picture
In September comes the UCI World Championships. My boy, of course, won the Time Trial competition. I was happy. :)

Picture
In October, we have the Race of the Falling Leaves - or as it's more properly known, il Giro di Lombardia.

And there we have them: Thirteen cycling races from throughout the year.

And for you greedy lot, there's just a tiny bit more to enjoy.

I'm not in denial about why you keep coming back.

So here ya go:

C'mon everybody! Get in the pool!

Ciao...!

I've never met anyone who was soooo into cycling. I've been introduced to a world I would not have visited otherwise. TY

Happy T13!

Cobblestones?! I enjoyed reading this list, and it makes me want to take one of my modest little rides on the nearby riverside path. :) Thank you for sharing.

I just bought my sons new bikes for the summer. (They outgrew their old ones.) I'll share your post with them and maybe it will inspire. Thanks.

In the summer of 2004, I was in France and I caught the tail end of Le Tour de France. It was pretty exciting to watch. I didn't realize there were so many other races. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! Lots of comments already! :)

@Joy - thanks for coming by! I hope you liked it. :)

@Adelle - Yup, I sure am! :) It's a lifelong thing, too - nearly. At least twenty-something years worth.

@Darla - yup! Cobblestones. The most painful race by far, though, is Paris-Roubaix. That one will get a post of its own, next year.

@Brenda - let me know if it works! ;)

@Harriet - thanks! I think so, too. Heh.

@Paige - I've only scratched the surface, really.

@jehara - You have no idea how jealous I am right now...

@Inez - Did I ever say otherwise, m'dear? ;)

My husband and the boys have bikes, I need to get one too - would be a fun family activity.

The Irish tour would be interesting. I remember the roads being very narrow. I always enjoy your cycling posts, although I'm strickly a casual cycler.

Yes, you do need to mention the Tour de France, just to help me figure out what part of the calendar it goes on.

I think I would rassle a classroom full of children (and win!) to get to watch the Tour of Ireland.

And I've never wanted to swim more than when I saw that picture.

Milan San-Remo is always a fave of mine. Never dull.

And that eye candy is almost enough to get me to a pool. almost.

@Tatiana - I highly recommend getting a bike of your own - especially if you have bike trails or safe cycling lanes to use it on!

@Shelley - I'm glad you like my posts - and I want to ride in Ireland soooo bad! :)

@Alice - Well, then. My work is done! LOL!

@Sasha - While it wouldn't be the same as being there in person, they usually air highlights of the Tour of Ireland on Versus channel. If you get that, tune in and enjoy the scenery. ;-)

@Jia - I'm not a big sports fan, either. Just cycling and rugby. Cycling as a sport. Rugby as eyecandy. Heh.

@Janice - you know it, hon! ;-)

@Jennifer - I can't take the credit, really. It really is that tasty! LOL!

@Elise - This year's Milan San Remo was great, wasn't it? And yeah, I'd be willing to brave the sunshine to splash around with those lads...
